Learning = Uncomfortable

Learning means that things are "going well"!

“Well, that didn’t go well”, is something I often hear from clients when they are in meetings where people aren’t visibly happy, or a Target hasn’t been met the first time.

When I ask why they think it “didn’t do well”, the response is “people weren’t happy”…”I could see some people were uncomfortable”…

To me, that doesn’t mean “things didn’t ’go well’”.

That’s because I know that “Learning = Uncomfortable”. That when people are happy and comfortable, they aren’t learning! And to me, as a leader, when people are learning, that means things are “going well”! Because learning allows people to grow! To solve problems they once thought were unsolvable! To do more than they ever thought they could do…and be more than they ever thought they could be!

When I was first learning Lean, I would sometimes be unhappy and frustrated when things didn’t turn out as I thought they should. My fabulous teacher, Leslie Henckler, would always say to me: “You might not like what you are learning, or how you are learning it…but you are learning!”

And (as always) Leslie was right!

So next time you are discouraged and think things didn’t “go well”, take some time to reflect on what people (and you) have had the opportunity to learn, and you might change your mind and realize things went perfectly well after all!
